Kansu, Gansu

Kansu (Gansu) carpets are woven in the Gansu province of northwestern China. These rugs are associated with early Chinese carpet traditions and often feature Buddhist symbols, geometric patterns, and traditional Chinese motifs. Kansu carpets reflect the cultural influences of Central Asia and China along historic trade routes such as the Silk Road. Kansu is a province in China that includes the city of Ninghsia. The major weaving center is Ninghsia, but rugs were woven in many smaller towns. Generally, rugs of Kansu are coarsely woven in comparison to Ninghsia. Designs are usually rendered in blue on yellow, light red or tan fields. Some Kansu rugs have wool weft.
