Chemical Wash

Chemical wash refers to a process used in carpet finishing where chemical solutions are applied to the rug during washing in order to soften or alter the appearance of the colors. This treatment can lighten tones and create a more muted or aged appearance, though it may also affect the durability of the wool if improperly applied. The applications of chemicals (sometimes lime, chlorine compounds or wood ash) to a rug or carpet to soften the colors, soften the wool and increase the sheen of the pile. Harsh chemical washes are cited as the cause of weakened or embritted fibers in some old rugs.
