Khotan

Khotan, the largest of the East Turkestan oases, had the most extensive production of carpets, especially at the end of the 19 Century in response to the demands of the Western market. In fact most of the late aniline dyed examples are generally attributed to Khotan. Most of the carpets are of wool and feature the three medallion pattern, followed by the gul design, the vase and the pomegranate, and other motifs of foreign influence.

Khotan carpets have a warmer palette and are also distinguished by a looser weave and brown wefts, which tend to be in three, rather than the more usual two, rows between the knots.
