Mamlukes
Until the Ottomans
conquered Egypt, the country had a flourishing carpet industry
which reached its peak during the days of the Mamlukes. Until
about mid 16 Century these carpets could easily compete with
carpets made in Persia.
The carpets made by the Mamlukes
are so strikingly individual that they can never be confused
with any other oriental carpets. Many of those made before
the Ottomans conquest were made only in three colors, red,
blue and yellowish green. A silvery haze lies over all early
pieces, due to the fineness of the wool used.
